Sennheiser has refreshed its popular CX 80S earbuds and HD 400S headphones with significantly upgraded successors. Renamed the CX 80U and HD 400 U, these feature USB-C connectors and support digital audio playback up to 24-bit/96 kHz. The update provides future-proof connectivity with modern smartphones, tablets, PCs, and gaming consoles. This comes at a time when the older 3.5mm standard is becoming less ubiquitous.
Both models are compatible with iOS, Android, ChromeOS, macOS, Windows, and SteamOS. Similarly, both devices feature a microphone for calls and sport an identical form factor to their predecessors. However, fashion-conscious buyers may be disappointed with the singular Black color variant. Likewise, both devices sacrifice advanced features, such as active noise cancellation, spatial audio, and integrated voice assistants, for a cheaper price tag.

The Sennheiser HD 400U feature a closed-back, over-ear design with passive noise isolation. The company claims that the cans deliver the same rich bass as the previous model, and they include a detachable cable and storage pouch. Conversely, the Sennheiser CX 80U are compact earbuds that come equipped with three ear tip sizes and a balanced sound quality. While both lack industry-leading features, the introduction of USB-C and their continually affordable price tag make them a compelling choice for price-conscious buyers.
The Sennheiser CX 80U and HD 400U are available now for $39.95 and $99.95, respectively. Both can be purchased from authorised dealers and Sennheiser’s website. They should remain relevant for the next few years.
